Hispanics celebrate and showcase their heritage

From the Sep. 15 and until Oct. 15, the U.S. celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, a celebration showcasing achievements and contributions of Hispanics in the country.

The history of the celebration

The beginnings of the Hispanic Heritage Month goes back to Sep. 17, 1968, when the U.S. Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim the National Hispanic Heritage Week, which included Sep. 15, as a coincidence of several commemorative dates of independence of Latin American countries.
In 1974, President Gerald Ford, issued a proclamation, where schools and human rights organizations were able to participate in full during the week of the Hispanic Heritage.
Later, on August 17, 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill establishing the celebration for a month.
Since 1988, American Presidents have issued a proclamation in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.
